I can’t touch my toes!

Do you remember your first yoga class?

I do! I remember checking in at the desk in NYC and said, “Hi, I’m here for yoga… I can’t touch my toes…” I was so nervous because I was inflexible and I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I also remember thinking I am going to make a fool out of myself.  During the practice, I kept thinking that I am going to die. My mantra throughout the whole class became, “I am never coming back. I am never coming back.” That was my first experience back in 2001!

Now fast forward to the present day in November, 2018.  As a teacher, I have been through what other students are going through (and I still am). Newer practitioners come to my class feeling defeated already.  I always tell my students not to worry about the results of the practice. Keeping practicing and enjoy it without worrying about if you can touch your toes or not! Does touching your toes make you a better person or a better yogi? Short answer, no.

Maybe you will be able to touch your toes in the future or become more flexible. The important thing is the positive experience that we are after. It is the journey into the unknown. Every time you get on the mat, you will have a different experience. One day, you may become more flexible and being able to touch your toes. Maybe in the future you will become more stronger. Only one way to find out, keep practicing! Enjoy it! Be able to smile and it’s ok to be right where you are whether you can touch your toes or not. Important thing is that you are practicing! Giving best effort you can! That goes further in life than touching your toes! Namaste!
